Johan van Rooyen

Johan was born right here in Elsburg in 1973. He attended Laerskool Elsburg and finish school at Hoerkool Elsburg in 1989. He was not a great athlete at school, most of that only happened later in life!

Johan had a back operation in December 1995, after a car accident, in which steel rods were placed along his spine. A follow up operation was done in February 2003, after a second car accident in which one of the rods snapped and had to be repaired.

Johan took up cycling and mountain biking in 2004 and later, in 2009 running marathons. He ran his first Comrades Marathon in 2010 and he has completed numerous cycle events including 6x 94.7 cycle challenges (both the road race and the mountain bike challenge – back to back), 2x Subaru Sabie mountain bike race, 3x Hyper to Hyper road race (now known as the Fast One).
