I am the mother of a 13 year old Autistic boy. There were no autism-specific secondary schools in Johannesburg so I connected with 2 other families and we badgered the Children's Disability Centre into developing a phase for teenagers - to be based in Braamfontein in JHB. AQUA opened in January 2008 with 3 kids and now has 22 children between the ages of 12 and 17 attending daily. It is an incredible place where parents are encouraged to be parents because the School is taking responsibility for educating the kids. This is a first as anyone with a disabled child can tell you. Usually the parents must struggle to get services.
Now - my 'struggle' will be to complete my 2nd Comrades marathon and raise money for AQUA. Please join me!
