Phil says: This is my 2nd Cape Epic ride. I was invited by Jack last year to ride with him. I have known Jack for many years and decided to take up his challenge. Apart from a few Cape Argus rides the bike was not something I had spent much time on. I thoroughly enjoyed my ride last year. My main impressions were a well organised world class race, beautiful scenery and a real physical and mental challenge. Unfortunately when asked again this year by Jack to participate, I only remembered the scenery and good organisation!!
With excellent support and help from my wife Christine who is my "Manager" I am ready to take up this challenge again.

Jack says: "This will be my third Epic ride. What started off as a simple "one off" to prove that I could do the Epic, has now become a real passion. My long-suffering wife (who incidentially is writing this piece - I am too busy riding!) deserves all praise and a little shiny "something" in a small box when I get to the end of the race this year. Seriously, in addition to achieving a lot of personal satisfaction from riding and (hopefully completing) the race, it makes it all the more worthwhile that the Rotary Club of Morningside can benefit from this effort. The Rotary Club of Morningside is a dynamic club based in Gauteng, South Africa, committed to raising awareness of important humanitarian issues through events such as its annual Spring Charity Walk, and now, via the gruelling ABSA Cape Epic - a 722 kilometre, eight-day mountain bike race through the fairest cape of all, the Western Cape of South Africa. Five teams have committed to raising funds for the club, to put towards the Rotary International (www.rotary.org) PolioPlus initiative of eradicating polio worldwide, as well as the club's specific projects. Examples of past projects include SANCA drugs and alcohol Rehabilitation Centre and Family Support Project, Diepsloot Counselling Centre, Zikhuliseni Skills Training Centre at Bophelong Place of Life, Embezweni Child Care Centre, Sefikeng Primary School Upliftment Project, Careers days at Sekolo sa Borokgo School, Randburg plus many others.
