Dear friend,

Ferdi and Melissa have made a pact to take on the ABSA Cape Epic challenge www.cape-epic.com taking place from 27 March to 3 April 2011.  Although it is going to be a HUGE challenge for both of us, it is also an amazing, lifetime opportunity for anyone who has a passion for cycling like we do!

The Absa Cape Epic presented by Adidas takes place every year around the last week of March and the first week of April.  The race is held over 8 days and includes a time-trial prologue.  The route changes every year, and leads aspiring amateur (like us) and professional mountain bikers from around the world (more than 50 countries) through 707 kilometers of the unspoilt nature of the Western Cape and up approximately 14 550 vertical meters of climbing (equivalent of climbing Mount Everest twice) over some of the most magnificent passes in South Africa.  The Cape Epic is also the most televised Mountain Bike race ever.

One of the most difficult parts of the Cape Epic (there are many) is gaining an entry to this prestigious event.  Only 1 200 riders compete in this race, with international riders, so entries are very limited.

We managed to acquire an entry via the Morningside Rotary club who kindly offered us an entry on condition that we raise funds for the very noble charities that they support.

In partnership with Sandton Victim Support, the community, the Sandton SAPS and Corporate sponsorship, the Rotary Club of Morningside intends to establish a rape and trauma centre to be constructed on the grounds of the SAPS premises in Summit Road, Morningside.  This centre will provide much needed counselling support and legal and medical advice to those who have been traumatised through rape, armed robbery or any other traumatic incident.

The estimated cost of building and establishing this unit is approximately three million rand. The Rotary Club of Morningside has undertaken to build the centre and we now need to raise funds for this purpose.  Once the unit is built and established, it will be funded by the community for the community.

The fact that we are riding this gruelling race in aid of charity will make it that much more worthwhile. Your support for us and for this charity project will be hugely appreciated and will contribute to our team making it to the finish line of the Cape Epic on the 3 April 2011.

We would appreciate your support of our ride by way of donation for the Rotary Club of Morningside (your donation is paid directly to the charity organisation).  Any contribution that you can make will be greatly appreciated.

Our aim is to raise R15 000 for the Rotary Club Morningside.  Please help us to achieve this by donating by using the link on this website.

Thank-you for your generous support......every bit will go a long way.
