My name is John Power and I am a wild dog researcher on a game reserve in the Limpopo valley where we are involved in the protection of South Africa’s last free-range populations of large carnivores.
I am participating in the Bike 4 Beasts Mountain Bike challenge on the reserve on 26 April 2009. I have never ridden mountain bikes at all, so to say the least it will most definitely be a challenge ! My last significant moments on a bicycle were as a farm boy on of those red BMX’es during the 80’s ! So a giant step is to be taken on that balmy April day…
My target is R 20, 000 and I wish to support conservation endeavours of the Endangered Wildlife Trust’s Carnivore Conservation Group. Specifically I am interested in research on wild dog, leopard and cheetah. The funds would cover the purchase of equipment, like radio-telemetry and remote-sensed cameras. In this undertaking Ill be pitting my stamina at cycling this 65 km race against that of the wild dog’s ! I suppose there’s only one way to appreciate the extent of a wild dog’s homerange. My team includes two other reprobates from Kwazulu-Natal who also work on wild dogs… Many thanks for your support.
