Paul Brink, co-founder of the heart rhythm charity PACE, will be participating in the Ironman Event on Sunday 25 April in Port Elizabeth. This is indeed a grueling event with distances of a 3.8km sea swim, 180km cycle and a 42.2km run.
Paul will use this event as a fundraiser for PACE's PATIENT SUPPORT FUND. The PATIENT SUPPORT FUND assists suitable applicants with costs related to arrhythmia procedures, device implantation, treatment and care management.
Paul is very passionate about saving lives of people affected by heart rhythm problems. He is a Professor of Internal Medicine at the University of Stellenbosch Medical School and Tygerberg Hospital. His strong interest in heart diseases and genetics have resulted in the mapping and identifying of genetic defects of inherited heart diseases namely: Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy, Long QT syndrome and Familial heart block.

Know your heart rhythm! Dangerous heart rhythms causing sudden death CAN be prevented by quick CPR/AED(defibrillation) treatment! PACE aims to Prevent Arrhythmic Cardiac Events, leading to cardiac arrest, by providing education and raising awareness. Even young sportspeople can suffer from an undetected heart condition causing lethal arrhythmias (abnormal heart rhythms) leading to sudden and unexpected death unless recognised timeously. Internal or external defillibration is highly effective in dealing with these events and support and education should be readily available to those affected. Prof A Okreglicki (Cardiologist and Electrophysiologist) has established a PACE PATIENT SUPPORT FUND to support families and patients affected by ARRHYTHMIA. The fund will alleviate the huge emotional and financial challenges faced by sufferers and their families. |
