My "desert partner", Kimberly Dods and I are about to leave for China to do another gruelling 250km foot race....
Having conquered two of the deserts, the Atacama and the Sahara, our next challenge is The Gobi March, taking place in the Gobi Desert in Xinjiang Province, China, on the 14 June 2009.
The Gobi desert is known to be the windiest desert on earth, coupling this, Time Magazine has labeled this endurance race as one of the Top 10 Endurance Competitions in the world.
We will be carrying our own mandatory equipment and our backpacks will weigh anything from 7 kgs to 15kgs. With this hefty weight on our backs, we will cross a wide range of terrains from river crossings and donkey trails to gorges, mountains and rocky terrain, not to mention the expansive distance over flat desert.
The course covers roughly 250 kilometers over seven days, reaching altitudes of about 3000 meters. But nothing is as it seems when one enters the Gobi Desert. Routes may change daily depending on weather conditions, water levels and the levels of dust which can impair visibility.
We are supporting a very very special charity organisation that gives hope to abandoned newborn babies. It's called the "Door of Hope" and mothers literally dump their babies in a little hole in the wall in a couple of houses in downtown Johannesburg and disappear into the night with the hope that their babies might survive and even have the possibility of a future.
Kimberly and I have been to the house personally and it was so extremely humbling to see how these infants are loved and looked after with so little. They DESPERATELY need finanacial support.
Our trek for good doesn’t end after the Gobi March! Next challenge Australia and then Antarctica….

Door of Hope |
40 to 50 babies are abandoned on the streets of Joburg every month. The Door of Hope is a safe haven for these children. They have built "a hole in the wall" where mothers can leave their babies, as opposed to leaving them on the streets to perish. |
