Education made a real difference in our lives and can make a real difference for the people of South Africa. That's why we've chosen to champion the Bike2School program by the Big Tree Foundation. www.bigtree.org.za.
A survey by the Western Cape Education Department found in excess of 500 000 children spend about two hours or more per day walking to school. The Bike2School program provides bicycles to these children to use to get to and from school. The major cost of the bike is paid by a sponsor but each child must make a small but meaningful contribution. This creates a real sense of ownership.
To draw attention to this project, and in a moment of utter madness, the 2 of us entered the Absa Cape Epic | The Magical + Untamed African MTB Race. 1200 riders, 8 days, 781km and 16 300 meters of climbing over the beautiful yet brutal terrain of the Western Cape. www.cape-epic.com.
We are paying our own way through this adventure but would like to ask you to help us enrich the lives of children by supporting the Bike2School Project, encouraging regular school attendance and the general upliftment of communities which that will bring.
Those sponsors who want to will receive regular email updates after each day's racing, both on how the overall race is progressing but also how us "week-end warriors" are fairing amongst the world's elite mountainbike champions.
Every child should have an education. And a bike!
