ABOUT BIKANA JUNIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL & COMMUNITY
WOW ! Thank-you, thank-you, thank-you, to all who have already made donations. R85 000+, gifted by kind friends via Back-A-Buddy and another R15 000+ via contributions in kind, materials, travel, accomodation and time - not to mention all the love and support.
Special thanks fom Giselle & I, to JP De Wit as well as Andrew and team who took care of the building work on site ........... what a transformation - you guys are phenomenal ! Noluthando Dlela, what great love and devotion to the Bikana's School children - your hard work and belief continue to be be an inspiration. Sue and Alan thanks for the ongoing encouragement we couldn't have tranformed our idea into action without you.
We have nearly met our target and now only need to riase the funds to pay the remaining bills, and provide the much needed tables, chairs and desk as well as some other remaining essentials.
OUR CAUSE : CREATING POSSIBILITIES
With the support of the teachers and community members, we want to help the Bikana school & community and as many other schools and children as possible, in these poorest rural communities. We want to do everything we can to help to create a positive school and community environment, which encourages learning as well as the growth and development of their/our children.
Despite their challenges - the children smile. They love their soccer, netball & softball, making-do with very little in the way of sports equipment or facilities. They are courageous, have hope and want to learn to ensure a better future for themselves and their families.
The community is dealing with severe poverty and HIV/AIDS. Bikana school alone, has over 100 pupils orphaned by HIV/AIDS. They are cared for by siblings, family or the community - most of whom are not formally employed. Research done by the "Human Science Research Council" highlights their challenges and lists the community as one of the top 5 "most deprived areas" in the country.
In 2009 Giselle & I hope to extend the work at Bikana to other schools and communities in other "most deprive areas".
