Riding the edge
On the first of June 2011 I will climb aboard my bicycle and peddle out of Johannesburg on my trip of 7000 kilometers around the boarders and coastlines of South Africa.
There are many reasons why I have decided to embark on this journey; the top three are listed below.
- As a journalist I have visited 19 countries in the past 8 years, but I have not explored my own country. By using the website, Twitter and Facebook during my trip I plan to encourage other South Africans to explore their own country. I am hoping that the photos, stories and videos I post over the two months that I am on the road will ignite a passion for the far reaches of our country.
- Fundraising is a major part of this adventure and I will be donating 75% of the funds raised to CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation and the other 25% to 3-year-old Caysie Jenna who is suffering from Acute Myeloid leukemia.
- I plan to produce a coffee table book of stories and photos from the trip, once again all the money from the sales of this book will be donated to the nominated charities.
My aim is to cover about 100 kilometers per day and the first leg of my trip will take me 250 kilometers from the Choc house in Johannesburg to Zeerust in the North West province, from here I plan to turn left and head towards Mafikeng.
This is the point of the trip where my Twitter, Facebook and website followers will take over my life. They will be the ones who decide which routes I follow and what places I visit. Every night I will post an update on my website with information on the routes that lie ahead of me the next day, the next morning I will see which of the routes have the most votes and that is the direction I will take.
I will also be encouraging other cyclists and ordinary people to join me on sections of the ride for as long or short as they would like. The only stipulation being that they make a donation towards our charities.
The plan is to complete this epic journey by the end of July 2011, two months and approximately 7000 kilometers later. This adventure will not be possible without support from many various industries, if you feel that you are able to be of support in any way whatsoever please contact me via the e-mail in the contact section of the website here: http://www.edgeride.co.za

BELIEVE RIDER
As part of "The Believe Project" and in support of my brother Craig Bainbridge. I will be riding my mountain bike from Nelspruit to Cape Town via JHB and DBN.
I will be leaving Nelspruit on the 12th April with all my camping and cycling equipment on board to begin the 3000KM journey accross the country. If you wish to track me please join my twitter followers. @believerider or through my Facebook group believerider.
The aim of this ride is to raise funds to help Craig in his battle against Gatro/oesophagual Cancer. Unfortunately Craig has been left without Medical Aid as he was teaching in Dubai at the time of his diagnosis, and as such receives his treatments through the Joburg Gen. As a family and friends we try to pay privately where ever possible to ensure Craig can receive the best treatment and ensure that when ever he is hospitalized it is done through a private hospital.
Thanks for taking the time out to view our event, and we truly appreciate your donations.
Have a great day
OZ Odyssey
I will depart on the Australian Odyssey from Perth on the 22 July 2010 and my aim is to reach Brisbane on the 24 September 2010. My route shall follow three of Australia’s desert tracks and shall pass as close as possible through the center of Australia. My cycle has been planned to take place during the Australian winter, reducing the risks associated with the extreme heat of the Australian deserts.
My cycle shall be undertaken solo without the aid of a support vehicle. All food and water required for the desert crossing will need to be carried or obtained on route.
I estimate that on average I will complete 100km per day. The route conditions vary considerably from sealed roads where it will be possible to complete longer distances to corrugated dirt roads and desert crossings.
The total distance to be covered is calculated at 5530km, the number of cycling days is estimated at about 52 days with an additional 13 rest days.

SiyaShova - we're pedalling!
On the 20th of March 2011 we will set off from Cape Town on a journey that will take us through eight months, ten countries, and 12,500 kilometres, leading to our destination – Cairo. We aim to raise as much as possible for the HearUs Foundation, a charity that helps bring the right of hearing to those who do not yet have it – achieved via cochlear implants. We are three friends, ordinary South Africans, who want to do extraordinary things.
Before the trip, you'll also find us at the Argus Cycle Expo 2011 as well as the race itself on the 13th March 2011.
Follow us on our website www.siyashova.com. We're also on Facebook and Twitter

Companies or groups of people (i.e. friends or families) enter teams of 10-15 people who walk a 12 hour relay throughout the night of 3-4 September 2011.
The VIP Guests, the survivors, will walk the first round, followed by the caregivers (family, friends, doctors, nurses). After that, teams will continue with the relay throughout the night.
There will also be a special ceremony to remember loved ones who have passed away.
It is a huge event, with live entertainment throughout the night provided by amongst others Jakkie Louw, Kevin Leo, Elvis Blue, Steven Sterling, etc. Huisgenoot is sponsoring the stage. Joseph Clark will perform the full 90 minute "The Queen Experience" show at the Relay!
