My name is Sebastian Sonnekus. I’m a 15-year-old karate athlete from the Paarl–Wellington area, training and competing internationally.

In 2024 and 2025, I had the honour of representing South Africa at the WUKF World Championships in Mexico and Sweden. In Sweden, competing as part of the MASA WUKF Presidential Team, I won gold in kata and silver in kobudo.

This year, I have been given yet another incredible opportunity: an invitation to train in Okinawa — the birthplace of karate. For me, this is much more than a trip. It is a chance to deepen my understanding of the art I love.

To help my parents pay for this journey, I completed a 100 Kata Challenge earlier this year, performing over 120 kata in one day across nearly five hours of training! 

Since then, I have gone on to win gold for kata at the Western Cape Provincial Championships, followed by another major milestone at the WUKF South African Championships & Afro-Asia Open in Gqeberha, where I took first place in kata in the biggest division of the tournament 💪🥋. I have also...
