My Story – Life Changed in an Instant

34 years ago, when I was just 17, my life took an unexpected and devastating turn. During a school PT class, my friends and I were playing touch rugby before our final holiday break. In a split second, an accident changed everything—a friend was pushed, fell over me, and forced my head between my legs as I sat on the field. I fell backward, and instantly, I couldn’t move.

A friend quickly realized something was wrong, and the game stopped. An ambulance was called, and from that moment on, my world was never the same.

I was diagnosed as a C5/C6 quadriplegic, permanently paralyzed from the chest down, with no finger function, minimal wrist function, and no triceps. My hospital journey was tough—I was supposed to have a vertebrae fusion operation shortly after my accident, but complications arose. My heart stopped beating, I battled two severe lung infections, and being allergic to penicillin made recovery even harder.
