My name is Kobie Mellet. I’m 17 years old, a Grade 11 learner at Die Brandwag High School in Uitenhage, and a proudly dedicated South African powerlifter.
This year, I received the incredible honour of being selected to represent South Africa at the Asia Pacific Africa Powerlifting Championship in Himeji, Japan, on the 12th of July. I’ll be competing in the under-76kg sub-junior division — a dream I’ve worked towards with every drop of sweat and sacrifice over the past few years.
Powerlifting has taught me discipline, focus, and resilience. It’s helped me grow stronger not only physically, but as a person — showing me what’s possible when you commit wholeheartedly to a goal. Making the national team is a huge achievement, but it also comes with a big challenge: covering all the costs on our own.
