Throughout the pregnancy, baby Nicholas' parents were continuously reassured that he was developing well and that there were no concerns regarding his growth or health.
On 18 May 2026, Nicholas was born via elective cesarean section. He experienced respiratory distress (difficulty breathing) and was rushed to the NICU immediately.
Doctors diagnosed Nicholas with a tracheoesophageal fistula, a rare congenital condition in which an abnormal connection forms between the windpipe (trachea) and the food pipe (esophagus). This caused swallowed fluids to enter his lungs and air to pass into his stomach instead of following the normal pathways. This diagnoses resulted in him having to be transferred to Sunninghill Hospital for surgery - approximately a 2½-hour drive from his family home.
Nicholas underwent surgery to repair the fistula and thereafter a separate surgery on his larynx to open his airways as he still couldn't breathe and had to be ventilated.
