Backing Brakfontein Primary

The Gouritz Cluster Biosphere Reserve (GCBR) is an action-oriented non-profit organisation founded in 2011. We are driven to improve, protect and restore ecosystems within the 3.2-million-hectare area that has been designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve due to its major biodiversity significance to the planet. 

One of our projects involves environmental awareness among primary school learners. During a recent outreach to Brakfontein Primary School located in the small, rural, coastal village of Vermaaklikehid we discovered that there was a greater need than what we could assist with. 

This small, well run, 87 year old school with 52 eager young minds is facing tough times as their facility struggles to keep up with the demands of education. With a leaking roof, scarce lighting, inadequate storage space and just one gas stove to feed all the children, the dedicated staff battles against the odds to provide a clean and nurturing environment.
