Help Me Regain My Independence After Graves' Disease
In 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, I suffered a life-threatening thyroid storm and was diagnosed with Graves' disease, a serious autoimmune disease.
Because government hospitals were overwhelmed with COVID patients at the time, my husband had no choice but to admit me to a private hospital to save my life. While I am incredibly grateful to be alive, the medical costs were devastating. Without medical aid, we were forced to sell our family vehicle to pay the hospital bills.
At the same time, COVID caused my husband's mechanical workshop to close, and our family lost its main source of income. We had to leave KwaZulu-Natal and move to Mpumalanga to stay with family while we rebuilt our lives.
Today, things are improving. My husband has found permanent employment, and despite my health challenges, I have started baking and doing small catering orders from home to help support our family.
Unfortunately, Graves' disease has affected my heart and continues to impact my daily life. Alt...
