Blue Crane Reading Project for Kids

The Jakes Gerwel Foundation, established in 2013, celebrates the legacy of the late Professor Jakes Gerwel through programmes aimed at developing the talents of emerging writers and unlocking the full potential of youths. Our vision is to achieve equality in a thoughtful, unified South African community that addresses and bridges socio-economic challenges together.

The Jakes Gerwel Foundation invites donors to sponsor a Christmas gift valued at R50 per learner. Each gift will include a storybook, sweets, and a small toy. This initiative supports the Foundation’s Blue Crane Book Project in the Eastern Cape, where we reach out to 3,000 learners in the foundation phase in the Blue Crane District, including Pearston, KwaNojoli (Somerset East), and Cookhouse. We employ 40 reading assistants who provide intensive one-on-one reading sessions to children with severe reading disabilities.
