Jan is not on medical aid or any type of hospital plan. He relies on government hospitals and clinics for treatment.

Up until 2020, Jan was a respected, self-employed contractor and boilermaker, an outdoor and adventure lover, admired by many for his spirit and character. He was a role model to countless people.

In October 2020, Jan contracted gas gangrene in his right foot due to his diabetes. Within hours, the infection spread, and his leg was amputated below the knee at Helen Joseph Hospital in Johannesburg, during the height of Covid-19.
