Vincent van der Merwe dedicated his life to one mission: saving Africa’s cheetahs. Through his leadership ofThe Metapopulation Initiative, he transformed fragmented, vulnerable populations into a growing network of hope, relocating individuals, restoring genetic diversity, and building safe spaces for one of the world’s most endangered big cats.

Vincent’s sudden passing is a profound loss to the cheetah conservation world. But his work is far from over. Now, it’s up to us to carry it forward.

Why this matters

Cheetahs are running out of time. With fewer than 7100 left in the wild of Africa and Asia, they face mounting threats: habitat loss, human-wildlife conflict, poaching, and inbreeding. Vincent believed that no cheetah should be left behind and every action he took was in service of that vision.
