My name is Cornelia, I am the mother of a very special young man.
His name is Johannes, we call him J.D. and he is 15 years old. He loves to play online games and talk to his gamer friends. He cannot read but has the remarkable ability to memorize words, he is always friendly even though, from a very young age, he has suffered from a condition called DMD (Duchennes muscular dystrophy).
DMD is characterized by weakness and wasting (atrophy) of the muscles of the pelvic area followed by the involvement of the shoulder muscles. As the disease progresses, muscle weakness and atrophy spread to affect the trunk and forearms and gradually progress to involve additional muscles of the body.
