In South Africa, public school teachers interact with from 35 to over 300 learners a day. Interactions that can inspire and motivate or dishearten and cause distress.
How teachers show up matters. Our teachers are not okay - in many schools, they feel overwhelmed, stressed and ill-equipped to deal with the challenges confronting them in their classrooms every day, in addition to the enormous pressure to produce academic outcomes. And they are leaving the profession; nationally, South Africa has lost 32 000 teachers in the past five years!
Learners are struggling as well - experiencing violence, trauma, poverty, barriers to learning, and significant anxiety. In many communities school needs to be the refuge. Children need emotional as well as academic support from the adults they spend most of their days with.
