Dear Friends, Family, and Kind-hearted Strangers,
We are reaching out to you with heavy hearts and hopeful spirits to share the story of David Sutherland, a beloved husband, father, friend and Agronomist In his 50s, David has always been a pillar of strength and joy in our lives. However, on the 17th of April 2025, our world was turned upside down when David was admitted to Hermanus Mediclinic with a life-threatening condition: bleeding on the brain which required surgery and subsequent stroke to the Pons area of his brain.
This unexpected medical emergency led to David losing consciousness for several weeks. The Pons, a critical part of the brainstem, plays a vital role in basic functions such as breathing, swallowing, communication, and coordination. Damage to this area is severe and requires intensive and long-term rehabilitation.
