In Alexandra Township, Johannesburg, something powerful is quietly taking shape.

Inside ordinary homes, families are opening their doors and transforming their living spaces into gallery homes—places where art, culture, music, storytelling, and community come alive. These are not just homes. They are emerging cultural spaces, owned and run by the people who live there.

At Maboneng Township Arts Experience, we have been working alongside community members to develop these gallery homes as part of a larger vision: to turn townships into thriving cultural and tourism economies.

But building this future takes support.

Many of these homes still need basic upgrades—painting, lighting, display materials, seating, and simple infrastructure—to properly host visitors and showcase local creativity. With the right support, each gallery home can become a place where:
