On the afternoon 18 February 2024, a huge thunderstorm accompanied by strong winds and heavy hail, swept through the suburb of Hamberg in Roodepoort, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. Worst affected were the residents at an apartment block called Die Eike, located on the corner of Steyn and Von Brandis streets. The complex consists of 49 flats in two identical three-story buildings, designated Block A and B. The entire roof of Block A was blown off and deposited in nearby yards. Fortunately, no one was injured. Nine families on the top floor were immediately left roofless, with the heavy rain pouring into their flats and ruining their possessions. (I am the owner of one of these flats.) All nine families had to find alternative emergency accommodation. The damage to the flats is extensive, and the roof has not been replaced yet. Although the nine flats on the top floor are worse affected, the 15 flats on the two lower floors are also affected by water seeping through. If the roof remains unrepaired, these other flats will eventually also become uninhabitable.
