Fighting for our family’s health
My name is Christy and I am married to Dwayne. We have two children, Zoe (11) and Zach (9).
In 2009, after many weeks in hospital, Dwayne was diagnosed with Hypoplastic Anaemia, which meant that his bone marrow was not producing enough white blood cells and platelets. This left him vulnerable to many infections. In 2011 his condition worsened when he developed an acquired, rare and life-threatening disease of the blood called Paroxysmal Nocturnal Haemoglobinuria (PNH). This means that his red blood cells are destroyed by the proteins in his immune system that help fight infection. This causes his red blood cells to break down prematurely, causing his urine to become red/ dark. His condition has progressively worsened, requiring him to have blood transfusions in the hospital every 3 weeks. Before he is admitted, he needs to have blood tests, which are an additional cost not covered by medical aid.
