From Hardship to Healing: Becoming Dr Moodley <3

After 3 unsuccessful MBBCh applications, 6 years post-matric and 5 years of pursuing a career as a Medical Scientist to no avail, I was unexpectedly accepted into Medicine (MBBCh III/GEMP I) at the University of the Witwatersrand in January of 2025, by none other than God’s grace and faith. In my first week of the degree, I attended a seminar where a wise Dr W. Khumalo spoke about “detaching oneself from the idea of poverty”- words that profoundly impacted me. My financial circumstances made me question if this degree was ever feasible for me, feeling privileged enough to be chosen, but too financially burdened to stay. That truth crippled me, silencing the softest dream I ever had. Yet against all odds I'm in the midst of finding the confidence and ability to pursue this challenging and competitive space, solidifying what I always knew deep down, but too afraid to say out loud, due to the weight it carries: “I am meant for Medicine.”
