Two remarkable Grade 8 students from Gauteng North have achieved something unprecedented in South African science fair history.
Johan Vorster from Pretoria Boys High, and Gustav Heesen from Afrikaans Hoër Seunskool, both from Laerskool Anton van Wouw, became the first Grade 7 learners ever to be crowned Overall Winners of the Gauteng North Imbewu Science Fair in 2025 — competing against older students and outperforming projects across multiple grades. The topic of their project? An accessible, AI-driven solution for teachers in overcrowded classrooms. Their achievement marked a historic moment for the Imbewu Science Fair and demonstrated that age is no barrier to innovation.
Their journey did not stop there.
