My name is Dee, and the woman I love - my partner, my heart, my home - is slipping away in front of me.
Her name is Sandra Bester. She is 54 years old. She is a nurse who has spent her entire life caring for others, comforting the elderly in their final moments, tending to wounds no one else sees and offering her endless compassion to anyone who needed it.
But now Sandra is the one who needs care. And I’m terrified we are running out of time.
She’s battling a devastating combination of illnesses: long COVID, stage 4 heart failure, severe lung damage, diabetes and high blood pressure. Her condition is critical and the doctors have told us there is nothing more they can do for her through the public healthcare system.
