South Africa deserves better. Across the country, citizens face broken systems, failed services, and leaders who too often forget who they serve. The Better Governance Initiative (BGI) was founded to help change that. We want to strengthen governance, enhance accountability, and empower citizens to play an active role in building our democracy from the ground up.

Founded by me and a small group of committed South Africans, BGI is a non-profit, non-partisan, civic organisation working to ensure that government works for the people, and that the people, Abahlali, help make it work. Ours is a citizen-powered initiative to help fix governance in South Africa

Our mission is simple:

• To make public participation real and meaningful.
• To hold government and public institutions accountable.
• To educate and empower citizens about how governance works and how to influence it.
• To conduct research that drives policy and reform across all levels of government.
