When Dr Obey Kadyamajongwe graduated as a veterinarian from the University of Zimbabwe in 2024, he believed the hardest part of his journey was behind him.
In reality, it was only the beginning.
Although fully qualified as a veterinarian in Zimbabwe, Dr Obey cannot practise independently in South Africa until he passes the South African Veterinary Council (SAVC) registration examinations. These examinations ensure that veterinarians trained abroad meet South African standards before they can serve our communities.
The opportunity is there. The ability is there.
The obstacle is the cost.
The SAVC examination fees alone total R45,000—an enormous amount for a young veterinarian who has left his home country to build a future from scratch.
