Help Our Family Rebuild After Our Son’s Battle with Cancer

In 2015, our world changed forever when our precious son was diagnosed with stage 4 kidney cancer at just 2 years and 6 months old. The cancer had already spread to his lungs, and what followed was a parent’s worst nightmare, a year of intensive chemotherapy and radiation treatment at Donald Gordon Medical Centre.

The treatment itself brought new challenges. The radiation triggered epilepsy, and when the initial chemotherapy failed to shrink the tumor as hoped, doctors made the difficult decision to increase his treatment to adult-level chemotherapy. The surgery to remove his kidney was complicated, the tumor was massive. Our little boy didn’t wake up immediately after the operation, and when he finally did, he was vomiting bile. He had to return to the operating theater for emergency surgery.

His case was so complex that only professors could treat him, and they charged 300% of the medical aid rate while our insurance covered only 100%. We were left responsible for the remaining 200%. My wife had to resi...
