On 30th of April 2026, the heart of African Dawn Bird & Wildlife Sanctuary stopped beating.  

*Percy Hickman*, our founder, protector, and the “main daddy of all daddies” to hundreds of birds and wild animals, passed away suddenly from a heart attack.

He didn’t just run a sanctuary. He was the sanctuary.  

From a young age Percy sacrificed his own comfort, safety, and time to rescue, rehabilitate, and give a home to animals that had nowhere else to go. Injured eagles, birds, orphaned monkeys, and abandoned owls and buck if it was hurt, Percy was there. He worked from sunrise to long after dark, often with blou draad and a hammer, fixing what was broken and making a plan when there was no money.
