My sister-in-law, Lee-Ann Erasmus, is currently walking a path that no one would wish upon themselves or any other mother. Yet, she is walking this journey with incredible courage, faith, and hope – all for her children.
After a heartbreaking miscarriage at 5 weeks, Lee-Ann fell pregnant again. Initially, there were concerns about Down syndrome, but after tests, the results were positive – baby Hailey is healthy.
At 17 weeks, she received a cervical cerclage (a procedure to close the birth canal to prevent premature birth), as her cervix had started to open. During this procedure, the doctor also took a biopsy of a growth on her cervix. The result: Stage 2 cervical cancer.
Because cutting was necessary during the cerclage, the cancer began to spread rapidly. She had to start chemotherapy immediately – while still pregnant. The doctor also placed her on strict bed rest for the remainder of the pregnancy.
On 9 May, she received her first round of chemo. After that, her kidney function...
