My son, Uriel, is 4 years old and lives with quadriplegic spastic cerebral palsy. This means all four of his limbs are affected by tight, involuntary muscle spasms that make basic movements — sitting up, holding a spoon, taking a step — a daily struggle. He requires constant support for feeding, dressing, moving, and even communicating.

What Caused Uriel's Diagnosis

Uriel was born prematurely at 32 weeks by emergency C-section, after I developed diabetic ketoacidosis and a placental infection during pregnancy. An MRI at birth showed bleeding in his brain, and he spent 4 weeks in the NICU. A follow-up brain MRI in February 2024 confirmed periventricular leukomalacia with sequelae of a germinal matrix haemorrhage — brain injury that occurred around the time of his premature birth. This is what led to his diagnosis of quadriplegic spastic cerebral palsy.
