My name is Tara, my husband and I are preparing to welcome our baby girl, Gracie, into the world in just a few short weeks.

Gracie was our unexpected little blessing — and from the moment we found out I was pregnant, we were overjoyed. We already have a little boy who will be turning 5 just before she is born, and we always dreamed of one day having both a son and a daughter to complete our family.

At our 23-week anomaly scan, our world shifted when we learned that Gracie would be born with a unilateral Left cleft lip and palate. Since then, this pregnancy journey has been emotionally and physically exhausting. What should have been a joyful season has instead been filled with fear, uncertainty, constant testing, and difficult decisions.

Because I am not on medical aid, I was advised to enter the public healthcare system in Cape Town where there is a multidisciplinary team available for babies born with cleft conditions.
