Our dad, Dave Hoy, is 62 years old, a proud father and the loving grandfather of a beautiful little girl who will be turning 1 in November. He’s counting down the days to visit us in Cape Town for her birthday, but right now, his health is making that uncertain.

He’s always been a hardworking building contractor, the kind of man who takes pride in his craft and goes above and beyond for his family. He’s the main provider at home, supporting our mom (who cares for our grandmother living with Alzheimer’s) and keeping everything together despite many financial challenges.

A few months ago, his health began to decline. He’d had a bad cough and night sweats for some time, which we initially thought was just a stubborn cold or sinus issue. But as his coughing worsened and he started to feel more unwell, we urged him to see a doctor.

Sadly, just over a year ago, he had to cancel his medical aid after a long period of irregular work and unpredictable income in the construction industry. Without medical cover, he delayed going to the doctor, worried about the costs. When...
