Hidden deep within the Swartberg Mountains lies Gamkaskloof - better known to many as “Die Hel” - a place of immense natural beauty, cultural heritage, and historical significance within the Cape Floral Region World Heritage Site.

For generations, families have lived, worked, and welcomed visitors into this remarkable valley despite its isolation and harsh terrain.

Recently, devastating floods struck the region, causing severe damage to the Gamkaskloof access road. River crossings were washed away, sections of road collapsed, trees blocked access routes, and vehicles became trapped by rising floodwaters.

Eleven guests, together with residents and staff, were left stranded inside the valley and eventually had to be assisted and evacuated by helicopter due to the dangerous conditions and complete loss of safe road access.

The recent disaster highlighted a growing reality: repairing and maintaining the road to Gamkaskloof by hand alone is no longer sustainable.

At present, much of the emergency road repair work must be done manually by a very small team...
