Help Restore the Historic Jameah Masjid

Your opportunity to help preserve a sacred legacy—and earn lasting reward.

For generations, Jameah Masjid has anchored Cape Town’s Muslim community. Today, we invite you to help restore and extend this treasured place of worship so that it can continue serving generations to come insha Allah.

A landmark of faith and history

Situated in Lower Chiappini Street in Bo-Kaap, Cape Town, Jameah Masjid was established in 1847. It holds a special place in South African Muslim history as the site of the country’s first official Jumu’ah performed in a masjid. Its historic front doors—documented by resident Imam Abdul Mou'tie Saban in 1962—remain in place today.

Every Friday, the masjid is filled to capacity for Jumu’ah. To accommodate the growing congregation and preserve this important heritage site, the community is restoring the building and extending it on one side. Civil works and drainage installation are currently underway.
