Rudolph Lekay, an 18-year-old matric pupil at Florida High School in Ravensmead, starts his day at 4:30am. He catches a lift to the local taxi and bus rank, where he spends the early hours selling sweets and chips to busy commuters. Then, by 7:20am, he’s on his way to school.
His mission? To save up for his matric dance in October, a celebration he says his family simply can’t afford. Lekay used his R150 Christmas gift money as start-up capital. He took a minibus taxi to a wholesaler near Promenade Mall and stocked up: soft sweets for R45, small packets of chips for R55, and see-through packets for R30. He made it back home with stock, and hope.
