Our beautiful daughter Elora Louw-Vorster born on 16 September 2023, was a healthy, vibrant little girl until one terrifying Friday morning 5 June 2026 At just 2.5 years old she went into a diabetic coma from Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA) at 12:31 AM a life threatening complication of undiagnosed Type 1 diabetes.

She was rushed by ambulance from Potchefstroom in the North West to Nelson Mandela Children's Hospital in Gauteng. She was fighting for her life. The medical team worked urgently with multiple IV drips to rehydrate her body, a catheter to monitor fluids and urine output, and intensive care to stabilize her blood sugar and acidosis. By morning she opened her eyes but our world had changed forever!!!

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition where the body's immune system mistakenly destroys the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. It's not caused by anything she ate, did or didn't do — it can be triggered by environmental factors like infections in genetically susceptible people. Nothing prepares you for this in a toddler who can't tell you how she feels…
