Every day, children in South Africa’s public hospitals face one of the scariest moments of their young lives, surgery.
They lie in bright, unfamiliar wards, missing home, surrounded by strangers in masks. For many, fear replaces the comfort every child deserves.
That’s why The Sleep Fairy Project, an initiative of the Tygerberg Hospital Children’s Trust, created Themba and the Sleep Fairy — a storybook and colouring pack that helps children understand what’s about to happen. Through Themba the hippo and his magical Sleep Fairy friend, young patients learn that “the sleep” before surgery is safe, the doctors are kind, and they’ll soon wake up to see their parents again.
It’s a simple, powerful idea that transforms fear into courage, one story at a time.
