There is a woman — let’s call her A — whose story I’ve watched unfold with equal parts heartbreak and hope.

She is in her early 40s, a gentle, hard-working mother who has spent years quietly surviving inside a marriage defined by coercive control, financial captivity, emotional harm, and fear. Her husband has kept her trapped by taking nearly everything she earns, monitoring her movements, and isolating her from any real support.

Over time he has broken her confidence so deeply that she truly believes she cannot survive without him.

A few years ago, she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, and now lives on disability income. Between the illness, the abuse, and the financial control, she has reached a point where she cannot move forward on her own. She cannot afford legal support. She cannot safely leave. And she cannot access basic documentation or services without money he refuses to let her use.

Recently, her daughter was able to leave the environment and is now safe, stabilising, and receiving support and counselling. But that separation has left this...
