A Plea for Hope: Securing the Future of Amelia Aftercare Centre: Imagine waking up each morning knowing that the very doors of your haven, your home—a place of safety, routine, and compassion—may not open tomorrow. This is an everyday reality faced by the staff and residents of Amelia Aftercare Centre, a sanctuary that is not merely a facility but a permanent home to 119 adults living with intellectual disabilities. Each individual here depends entirely on the certainty of care and the stability—a certainty now cruelly threatened.
A Devastating Blow: The Funding Crisis: In June 2025, the Department of Social Development delivered a notification that has rocked the very foundation of Amelia Aftercare Centre: a drastic cut of more than 60% to their annual subsidy. Even more distressing, as of today, not a single rand of the promised funding has been received. This sudden and severe reduction leaves the Centre with a shortfall of nearly R180,000.00 each month—funds that...
