Hi, my name is Nickey Seger, I’m 52 and from Roodekrans. Together with my partner, 63-year-old Grant Clack, we’re raising funds for our friend, 64-year-old Dave Spurgeon from Bryanston, Sandton, who urgently needs life-saving treatment for throat cancer.
I’ve known Dave for about 18 months, having met him at Dion’s birthday party in 2024 through Grant. When I heard he had been diagnosed with throat cancer and had no medical aid, my heart sank. Sadly, this is the reality for so many South Africans.
Dave’s doctors have said the tumour is treatable, but he needs to start radiation and chemotherapy immediately. Without medical aid — something he hasn’t been able to afford since being retrenched during Covid — the only option is the public health system, where the waiting list could take months or even years. That’s time he simply doesn’t have.
Just three weeks ago, Dave was diagnosed. Two weeks ago, a 13cm stent was fitted into his throat to help him swallow, as eating had become impossible. This stent...
