Help Joani’s Family Facing Huntington’s Disease

Joani has carried more than most of us could imagine. Outgoing, fun, and full of life, she has spent the past decade caring for her family through unimaginable loss.

Seven years ago, Joani’s father passed away while her mother was battling Huntington’s disease. Joani stepped in as caregiver, supporting her mom for 4 years and then through the final stages of life. Despite reaching out to multiple organizations for end-of-life support, she was told they “don’t deal with Huntington’s disease.” For 18 days, Joani watched her mom fade away, providing love and dignity until her passing.

Just two weeks later, Joani’s sister Merle—also diagnosed with Huntington’s—was dropped off at her home. For the past three years, Joani has cared for Merle as the disease slowly takes pieces of her away. Huntington’s disease is a rare, inherited condition that causes the progressive breakdown of nerve cells in the brain. It leads to uncontrolled movements, cognitive decline, and emotional challenges.
