My name is Nicole Marais and I am a Bachelor of Science (BSc) Honours student in Actuarial Science at the University of Pretoria (UP).
Running has always been my main sport, but an injury led me to cycling in 2025. My dad, a lifelong cyclist, convinced me to enter Ride Joburg with him on a tandem. Then, just days before the race, he became ill and could no longer ride. I ended up tackling my first cycling race on my own – all 97 km of it!
That unexpected challenge made me fall in love with cycling. On Sunday 22 November 2026 I will return to Ride Joburg, hoping to improve my time and earn a back-to-back medal. This time, I will also ride as a #Ride4UPDegrees Fundraising Champion.
