For countless women, especially in rural and underserved communities, leaving an abusive relationship is not simply a matter of choice—it is a matter of survival. Economic dependence often becomes a weapon of control, trapping women and their children in cycles of fear, silence, and violence.

The impact on children is devastating. Growing up in abusive homes normalises violence, leaving lasting emotional scars and increasing the risk that they will become future victims or perpetrators. Girls are particularly vulnerable, facing greater risks of grooming, sexual exploitation, coercion, and teenage pregnancy, often as a result of abuse rather than choice. These experiences reinforce cycles of trauma, poverty, and gender inequality that can persist across generations.

Gender-based violence affects entire communities. It places enormous pressure on healthcare, social services, and the justice system, while undermining family stability, economic productivity, and social development.
