Twelve-year-old Johaine Hendricks from Eerste River, Cape Town, should have been spending his afternoons on the soccer field, chasing the dream every young boy holds close to his heart.

Instead, he's fighting a battle no child should ever have to face.

In July 2025, after soccer practice, Johaine came home with what seemed like a small lump just above his ankle. Like many parents would, his family believed it was nothing serious. Even the first visit to hospital brought reassurance that it was probably just a cyst.

But a mother's heart never stops worrying.

A biopsy was done, followed by referrals to Tygerberg Hospital for more tests. MRI scans, CT scans, bone scans... with every appointment, Johaine's family prayed for good news.

Instead, they received the words that shattered their world.
