Our Story
I am Karen Withers, a 54-year-old resident of Mayor's Walk in Pietermaritzburg and a single mom to my son, Damien Groenewald. Our lives changed irreversibly on November 15, 2002, when Damien, only 15 at the time, was struck by a vehicle from the City Engineers. The accident left him in a coma for several weeks, and he emerged with life-altering injuries. Now 37, Damien is completely dependent on medical care, bedridden, and manages daily with significant challenges due to cerebral palsy and recurrent chest infections.

The Continuing Struggle
Since the accident, Damien has required constant medical attention, including multiple surgeries to mend his severely damaged leg, outfitted with a 38 cm pin and various plates. Managing his care as a single mother, especially after the loss of his father, has compounded the emotional and financial challenges we face. Without medical aid, due to prohibitive premiums, we struggle to cover the costs of his essential supplies.
