On 5 June 2025 Marco Schalekamp, a 41 year old single father, was shot and left for dead with his young child in the vehicle. Marco was critically wounded. He was shot multiple times, through both cheeks, shoulder and neck resulting in a critical injury to his C2 vertebra. Marco survived against all odds.
After receiving death threats in hospital Marco discharged himself and arranged a meeting with the investigating officer to give his statement. Shortly after, he was arrested on a murder and attempted murder charge due to a statement given by one of the other injured parties. Marco's carry-on firearm was found on him, not fired, with all ammunition accounted for, and entered into evidence by police.
Marco was denied bail due to the fact that he regularly works abroad for several weeks at a time and thus making him a flight risk.
